AN elderly woman was taken to Selly Oak hospital by air ambulance after burning her hands in a fire.

The woman, aged 81, is also believed to have suffered chest burns in the blaze, which is believed to have started in a bedroom in her home in Earlsdon Road, St John's, Worcester.

Her son, who was also in the house at the time, burned his hands and was taken to Ronkswood Hospital by land ambulance.

The air ambulance landed at the junction of Hanbury Park Road and Earlsdon Road, yesterday at around 3pm.

Firefighters were unable to confirm how the fire started, or the amount of damage caused.

Neighbour Graham Skinner was in his front garden when the air ambulance landed.

"I heard all the sirens at first," he said.

"I saw the air ambulance hovering above the road but didn't think it would actually land in the road because there is little room."
