WELLAND kart racer Daniel Gillett has smashed the Silverstone indoor circuit record in the final race of his first season.
Daniel, aged 12, from Orleton Close, only started with the Silverstone Junior Kart Club this season earning his full competition licence in the summer.
Throughout the season he has been consistently in the top three places in his group, often setting the fastest laps of the day but saved his best for the last race day of the season on Sunday.
Daniel said: "At the final session of the year I went one better and actually broke the indoor circuit's lap record when I set a time of 18.68 seconds. This was almost 1/10th of a second faster than the previous lap record that had stood for some time."
Out of 150 members of the Junior Cart Club, Daniel has also been selected as one of the top ten drivers to attend full days assessment at the circuit the end of the month with a Silverstone Scholarship for 2002 being awarded to the winner.
Daniel said: "I would like to thank sponsors Aerosystems International for giving me the opportunity to have such a successful 'rookie' season.
"Without their sponsorship I would not have been able to attend a full season of tuition."
