POOLBROOK in Malvern has joined a small but growing group of communities determined to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee with a great day out.

A £250 grant from Malvern Town Council to pay for a sound system for the Poolbrook Jubilee Party on June 1 was due to be rubber-stamped at a meeting last night (Thursday).

Councillors said at a meeting of the body's grants working party last week that they were impressed with organisers attempts to get the event up and running.

Games, stalls, raffles, sideshows and other attractions will all feature during the day, followed by a barbecue and music during the evening. If the Malvern Hills Conservators give the go-ahead, and health and safety issues can be resolved, it will take place on the green outside the Foley Institute.

"We've got hunt the lollipop, hit the rat and even a china-smashing stall, although I don't know where to get the china for it," said Angela Noble, chairman of the organising committee.

"I want to try and get local bands playing during the evening," she added.

"I would also really like a children's entertainer, someone who can make animals out of balloons and that sort of thing, although I don't know whether there is one in the area."

There will be a jubilee theme to the event, with children dressing up, although Mrs Noble says the anniversary is only "an excuse to have a party".

"It would be great if we could help local organisations with the event," she said.

"For example, it would be nice if we had some money left over at the end of the day to help with things like the Foley Institute, which badly needs central heating."

The next step for organisers is to try and gain sponsorship from local businesses.
