FOR several weeks now Upton have been threatening to go on a points riot and Warley were the unfortunate team to be on the receiving end in this North Midlands One fixture.

UPTON 52pts, WARLEY 15pts

Upton were strengthened by the re-introduction of Mark Tether, and with Matt Bookham dominating the lineout the back division are getting plenty of chances.

Warley, who were relegated at the end of last season, kicked off and put Upton under pressure which finally resulted in winger Craig Smith going over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Upton then started to put matters right and the only time that Warley got back into the Upton half during the next 35 minutes was at the re-start after each score against them.

Second row, Maurice Bottomley opened the scoring for Upton when he scorched in from 10 metres following a lineout, drive and break away. Skipper Rob Heeley converted from wide out for 7-5.

Upton's dominance continued and the pressure brought results as Hugh Williams, twice, and Brad Raymond scored tries through some clever running and support play, but the try of the half went to prop Melvyn Hill who timed his arrival at the ruck to perfection. When scrum-half, Matt Mitchell and the rest of the pack had driven the ball up to near the line, Hill arrived to pick up the ball and dive over.

Heeley converted three tries to leave the half-time score at 33-5.

Upton were disrupted at half-time as Bottomley had to retire through injury and this brought on Barry Lancett. Warley started the second half like they did the first and with a series of drives and penalties had, within 10 minutes scored a converted try and a penalty through winger Timmons and conversion by No. 10 Perkins. This happened when Upton had only 14 men on the field due to Raymond and Atkinson having to retire through injury and Jonathon Rose was the only replacement.

In the fourth quarter, Upton's 14 got back on the track again through the dominance of the lineout, forceful forward drives and strong running by Mark Tether who set up a try for Nigel Watson to streak over in the corner. Hooker Paul Pickering then made amends for failing to score two first half tries when he outpaced the covering defence. Upton's eighth try went to Barry Lancett who trundled over in the last minute. Heeley added two more conversions and the final score was 52-15.

Tries: Bottomley, Williams (two), Raymond, Hill, Watson, Pickering, Lancett. Conversions: Heeley (six).

Upton moved further up the table and with no league games tomorrow (Saturday) Upton's next league fixture is away against old rivals Bromyard on December 1.
