THIRTEEN rowan trees were planted in the West of England Quarry half a century ago.
The event was described in the Malvern Gazette as the "first constructive action towards hiding scars caused by quarrying".
The first tree, donated in fact by the Gazette, was planted by Mr H W T Squibb (pictured), chairman of the central committee of the Malvern Electors' Association, and of the West Malvern Electors' Association.
The scheme originated with Mr R R Moran, the newest member of Malvern Hills Conservators.
