GIVEN the support MP Peter Luff has given to the pro-bloodsports lobby, Mr Pinney's eulogy (You Say, November 17) is unsurprising. Some of us, with longer memories, may beg to disagree with his judgement.

A few years back, when it was becoming clear that the good ship "Tory Worcester" was in danger of foundering, Captain Luff, unlike many of his fellows, did not uphold tradition and try to do all he could to save his vessel.

Instead, he was the first to jump for a nearby lifeboat, leaving his constituency passengers to fend for themselves. On approaching this lifeboat, he persuaded its bemused crew to ditch the perfectly good captain they already had so he could take a safe berth.

An amateur salvageman was then sent from headquarters to poor old "Tory Worcester" which, not surprisingly, duly sank to the bottom. A recent attempt by another amateur salvageman to raise "Tory Worcester" met with little success and future efforts look just as unlikely to prosper. But at least Mr Luff has made Mr Pinney happy.

A REECE,

Ely Close, Worcester.
