Two star

Britney the album's called, as if this young lady were some unique one-off, never to be repeated happening in the music world.

We can but pray.

Every mini-musical generation has its Britneys.

No surprise then that Britney's Britney album is not exactly unique, nor a one-off.

But it is impressive in its ability to distil every single facet of mediocre American production-line pop into its 14 songs. It is a very American affair.

Breathy, croaky, yearning vocals, unoriginal melodies, overproduced clinical sound, totally if not completely inane lyrics, dance beats, a large dose of ballads and worst of all scratching.

Britney informs that I'm a Slave 4 U, I'm Not Yet a Girl, Not Yet a Woman, and What It's Like To Be Me. Riveting stuff.

I Love Rock 'n' Roll as well. If only.

Bubble gum pop will always be with us. Harmless, yes. But what a distasteful habit.
