BROMSGROVE'S u13s took a development team to Yardley and District and came away with a good win in a high-scoring game against a team that was physically much bigger.
Undeterred by the size of their hosts, Bromsgrove took them on from the start and good combined team play resulted in a try for Luke Jones on the wing.
Yardley got themselves back into the game with some concerted forward efforts and, despite good defensive work from Tom Hinks, Matthew Edgar and Scott Morris, the home side scored two tries and took a 14-5 lead.
The forward game was fairly even between the two teams but Bromsgrove had the better backline and good teamwork allowed Ben Raybould to score twice before half time, one of the scores being converted by Scott Morris.
The visitors started the second half as they had finished the first and, from a quick penalty centre, Mike Penn burst through tackles to score in his first game for the club.
Yardley lifted their game at this point and put Bromsgrove under considerable pressure. On numerous occasions they were driven back from within yards of the Town try line.
The pressure eventually told and Yardley scored twice more to lead 24-22.
With two minutes left, Bromsgrove looked to have lost their last chance when a knock-on stopped them scoring. However, hooker Simon Prior won the five metre scrum against the head and George Crook scored to give Bromsgrove the win.
In poor conditions against a much bigger team, this was a good all round performance which should improve the confidence of the less experienced members of the squad.
