ANIMAL rescuers across the area are pleading with the public to think seriously before buying a pet for Christmas, writes Helen Clarke.
As centres struggle to cope with the ever-increasing amount of abandoned animals, carers fear many people will not heed warnings and buy animals needing a great deal of attention which they cannot give.
Many will then end up being abandoned and injured.
Ray Dedicoat from Hollytrees Animal Rescue Trust in Hollywood said the centre's 'silly season' started around Bonfire Night when many dogs were not kept under supervision and ran off when scared by fireworks.
