AFRO wigs, psychedelic prints and platform shoes were out in force for the opening night of retro revival Oh! What a Night -- and that was just the audience.
A jam-packed Alexandra Theatre, in Birmingham, was catapulted back to 1976, at the height of disco fever, for a night of groovy tunes, dazzling dance routines and sparkling stage sets.
Kid Creole starred as Brutus T Firefly, the hippest DJ in New York, who spins his discs at the Disco Inferno -- the only place to strut your stuff on a Saturday night.
As narrator to this energetic musical, the Seventies legend introduced the cast of city kids who live for their Saturday night boogie.
Nikki, the daughter of the owner of Disco Inferno, is on the verge of getting married to her controlling beau, Jack, until a cheeky Cockney stranger turns up on the scene to sweep her off her feet.
Young and old could not resist tapping and clapping along to dance-floor favourites from Blame it on the Boogie to camp classic YMCA.
Stuart Ramsay turned in a top performance as London lad Rik, while Kid Creole jives across the stage with so much energy and elasticity it would put Jay Kay of Jamiroquai to shame.
Impeccable dance routines and outstanding vocal performances all round make Oh! What a Night a sure-fire winner with all generations.
A hip-swinging crowd-pleaser, which I will most definitely be recommending to others, as it is quite a night to be had.
