A FORMER Worcester postmistress has died at the age of 90.

Ethel Simpson, pictured, ran Ombersley Road Post Office with her husband Leonard for 15 years until 1970.

After the couple retired they moved to Chacewater Crescent and still remained active in the community as members of Barbourne Bowling Club where Mr Simpson was captain, then president.

Born in 1911 at Apple Tree Hall, Shropshire, Mrs Simpson was one of seven children.

Waitress

She left home to work in London as a silver service waitress in the top hotels in London, where Ivor Novello was one of the notable names she waited on.

She met her husband in Rugby in 1952, after being introduced by his sister at an old time ballroom dance.

The two married the next year, running two newsagents in Coventry before moving to Worcester in 1955.

Mrs Simpson spent the last two years of her life at the Morton House Nursing Home in Fernhill Heath.

The funeral took place at St Stephen's Church on Friday, November 30, followed by interment at Astwood Cemetery.

Mrs Simpson leaves four stepsons and two stepdaughters.
