AWAY from the fog of Malvern's publicly-funded disasters there shines the highly successful, privately-funded Autumn in Malvern Festival. Its sponsors are QinetiQ and about 30 local businesses and individuals: not a penny comes from public funds.
Yet the festival enriches the lives of many, expands the arts with commissions and brings visitors and trade to the area. There is manifest goodwill from all concerned.
Artistic director Peter Smith founded the festival in 1989. Almost single-handedly he determines its content, gathers the sponsorship, books the artists and the venues, manages every detail and keeps the show on the road and solvent. He receives no financial reward.
Here is an example of individual enterprise and unfettered competence.
WILFRED HARPER, Shuttlefast Lane, Malvern.
