VOLUNTEERS are needed to join a new Worcestershire search and rescue group that helps police track down missing persons.
New recruits will be given military training by the founders Mark Sanderson and Steve Fox who helped in the hunt for eight-year-old Sarah Payne following her abduction.
Both men are members of the Territorial Army and are keen to attract new volunteers into the Central Counties Search and Rescue group which is based in Kidderminster.
"We would like to boost our numbers to about 70 so we always have enough people to send to a major incident," said team member Christine Turner.
"Anyone of any age can join but they do need to have a degree of fitness which would allow them to help in woodland searches.
"Volunteers will be trained in patterns of search, tracking techniques, footprint signs and survival techniques."
"If we can boost our numbers we will always have at least a dozen people who are free to help police in their search for a missing person."
The rescue group is currently seeking charity status which will help in raising money for tracking equipment.
"At the moment we fund ourselves but we would like to buy thermal imaging equipment and kit ourselves out in proper uniforms," said Christine.
"There is a real need for groups like this around the country as police resources are so over-stretched as we could see in the case of murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne.
"Our founders were involved in this search and it inspired them to set up the group which we will work alongside the police during future incidents."
