LOCAL authorities must do more to introduce "doorstep" recycling to reduce waste and do their bit for the environment, claims an MP.

Leominster MP Bill Wiggin claims local councils must ensure waste is collected from households to improve the percentage recycled.

Currently, the UK average for recycling is 11 per cent, one of the lowest rates in Europe.

The MP has added his name to a House of Commons campaign which is aimed at encouraging local authorities to introduce doorstep recycling.

The group of MPs claims recycling would not only cut greenhouse gases, it would reduce demand for unpopular landfill sites and incinerators as well as creating thousands of jobs.

"I am a long-time supporter of doorstep recycling," said the MP.

"We need to do more than just our bit. We need to go further and that has to include doorstep recycling. Not everyone can drive to a bottle bank nor is doing that necessarily environmentally-friendly.

"The decision to introduce doorstep recycling is down to councils and I hope they will soon have the opportunity to consider it."
