REVELLERS in Bromsgrove during the festive season can feel safer after police vowed to crack down on alcohol fuelled violence.

Police will be tackling problems in the town centre during the run up to Christmas following the launch of Operation Tango 11.

The scheme, which focuses on violent crime, follows on from the original two-month long Operation Tango, launched in July, which led to a huge fall in the number of recorded incidents.

Bromsgrove will be targeted with high visibility patrols and patterns of offences will be analysed and officers sent to police specific areas.

Pubs in and around the town centre are also taking part in the operation and licensees have been approached by officers who will be visiting in the run up to Christmas.

The aim is to make it known that officers are around and to reassure people who are out to enjoy themselves for the night.

DI Steve Cullen said: "Christmas is a time for celebration and we want people to enjoy themselves, but we don't want an increase in violence.

"For a small minority, alcohol and violence can be intrinsically linked."

Closed circuit television cameras look set to prove invaluable and operators will work closely with officers to notify them of any incidents as they occur.

DI Cullen added: "We believe that by increasing the number of officers on a high profile patrol, in and around the town centre, we should reduce the number of violent crimes."
