WORCESTER householders are being warned not to take the batteries out of smoke alarms at a time of year when Christmas tree lights and candles pose an extra hazard in the home.
Both elements played their part in 79 per cent of accidental house fires last year.
Further steps to prevent the risk of fire include ensuring Christmas tree lights are switched off at night and when unattended, and that several sets of lights are not wired into the same plug.
Open fires should not be left unattended and indoor Christmas lights should never be taken outside.
Extra care should also be taken if you are smoking and enjoying a festive tipple - many fires are started by smouldering cigarettes.
Burglary
But burglary peaks during the season, and householders can take steps to improve security and ensure Father Christmas is the only visitor in their homes after dark.
Nearly one-fifth of crimes reported last year were burglaries, and statistics also show 80 per cent of burglaries occurred when burglars got in through the front door.
Fire and security company ADT recommend householders install deadbolt locks and secure sliding glass doors with a bar in the door track to discourage opportunist thieves.
It also recommended presents were placed under the tree at the last minute, to avoid leaving easy pickings on show for thieves.
Any valuable presents should be post-coded with a security marker pen and not stored in sheds or garages.
"We would like to urge everyone to take a little extra time and care and try to be a bit more vigilant over their homes and their neighbours' homes this Christmas - it can make all the difference," said ADT spokeswoman Jackie Hewitt.
