A campaign to attract more foster carers and adoptive parents continued last week with a symbolic tree planting at Batchley First School.

Pupils planted old Worcestershire varieties of apple and plum trees, at an event attended by Mayor Dot Dudley and Karen Henson, who plays the title role in Christmas pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at the Palace Theatre.

The project formed part of a county initiative to celebrate the fact that 47 children have been placed with adoptive families over the last year.

Each was represented by the planting of a fruit tree, symbolising how children will blossom and grow like trees if nurtured.

Sara Castro, of the county adoption and fostering team, said the campaign would help the council protect children and improve their quality of life.

The county council is hoping to place 40 children with adoptive families this year, most of whom are under five.

The team is also keen to hear from people interested in adopting older children or those with disabilities, and from people with ethnic minority backgrounds
