WOODRUSH RFC stunned struggling Stourport on Saturday by recording their first league win since the 99-00 season.
The basement boys, marooned at the foot of Midlands West Four South after eight consecutive defeats this season, beat their second from bottom visitors 17-5 to bring some cheer to their Icknield Street fans.
The club returned to competitive action this season after a year in the wilderness.
Woodrush withdrew from Division Three on the eve of last season after an exodus of players prompted fears their young squad would be unable to compete at that level.
The club applied to return to the league structure this year and was relegated to Division Four as the bottom club.
But in a torrid start Woodrush were without a point until the weekend and had shipped an average of 29 points a game.
With relegation to North Midlands One beckoning, Rush have given themselves a glimmer of hope.
The club trails Stourport by two points and are five points adrift from the safe position occupied by third from bottom neighbours Kings Norton.
If Woodrush can beat Stourport in the return fixture they will need to take points off two other sides with Kings and struggling Dunlop the best bets.
The club has a break from league action with a friendly at the weekend, the fixture details have yet to be finalised but the club is pencilled in to visit Old Yards on Saturday.
And Woodrush return to league action at third placed Ledbury on Saturday, December 22, knowing an unlikely point or two would further aid their battle to beat the drop.
