MALVERN'S deputy mayor wants to set aside £5,000 from the town council's budget to give local people a Golden Jubilee to remember.

Councillors are due to consider the proposal by Frances Victory (Ind, Chase) at a meeting on Thursday to discuss this year's precept and other financial matters.

Speaking prior to the meeting, Coun Victory said: "I want to try and raise money from other sources, such as the district council and possibly traders, and organise something that everyone will remember.

"I'm a Coronation baby myself and I think it would be a tremendous shame not to mark the occasion somehow.

"There are lots of things I personally would like to do but it's public money and it has to be in partnership.

"Hopefully, it will be several different events throughout the year. The Jubilee is for the whole year and it would be a great shame to just do it on that weekend, when there are already celebrations going on in Poolbrook, and there is a recorder concert going on which will attract people from all over the place.

"Of course, at this point we don't even know if the money will be set aside."

John Kimberley, secretary to the Malvern branch of the Royal British Legion, said he supported the plan.

"I think the occasion warrants some kind of celebration," he said, "Especially when you consider that the Queen has been there 50 years and she has done a good job."

Should the proposal be passed, a meeting will take place with Malvern Hills District Council on December 19 to discuss ways of taking the plan forward.
