A £7 million project to extend the B&Q store in Redditch, creating up to 200 jobs, is ahead of schedule, writes Becky Procter.

The superstore is being built on the site of the former Alcad Battery Factory in Smallwood and due to its previous use, extensive environmental monitoring equipment has been used during the development.

Weather conditions, airborne dust and the presence of any pollutants have been recorded by environmental consultants Parkman and a site-based chemist has also been drafted in.

The project, which is being led by Parkridge Developments, is due to be finished in May and the store should open later next year.

The residential site occupying the former car park area will be developed by Wimpey Homes and work is expected to begin in January.

Regular meetings have been set up to keep residents informed of the progress of the project.

Recruitment for jobs at B&Q, including plumbers and electricians, will begin around Easter.
