PEOPLE living in Worcester are being urged to start the New Year on green - and recycle rubbish instead of throwing it away.

Hannah Phoenix, assistant environmental protection officer at Worcester City Council, said Christmas was traditionally a time when lots of waste was created from cardboard boxes to cards and paper, but appealed for people to recycle and not waste.

She said New Year would be an excellent opportunity to go green with all the extra rubbish such as cardboard, tins and Christmas trees to dispose of.

"Remember this is often the busiest time of the year for recycling so if the banks are full store items at home until the following week," she said.

6 The following is a list of recycling points and where they can be found:

n Worcester Garden Centre, Droitwich Road - Saturday, January 5, to Saturday, January 12.

n Homebase: Hylton Road, St Peter's and Blackpole - from Saturday, January 5, to Sunday, January 13.

n Hallow Road Household Waste Site, Bilford Road Household Waste Site - open throughout the holiday period apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

6 Christmas cards, envelopes, receipts, junk mail, newspapers, magazines and thin cardboard can be recycled at all paper banks in Worcester and at the two household collection sites in Bilford Road and Hallow Road.
