AN application for a 62-space car park in Kidderminster town centre has been submitted to planners.

Applicant Excel Properties, of Sheffield, hopes to house a commercial car park on the former Kidderminster Library site on Bromsgrove Street.

It proposes to split the car park on two levels to provide much-needed car parking space in town.

It has applied for a five-year lease on the vacant site.

Wyre Forest District Council planning officer Paul Wrigglesworth said the department had just received the application and was in the process of consulting with other bodies such as the Highways Agency.

The earliest the matter could come before the planning (development control) committee would be next month.

There has been ongoing concern from businesses and town centre bodies over the loss in available car parking spaces.

Spaces have plummeted from 3,670 to 2,815 but once developments such as B&Q and Tesco are established the council estimates 4,315 spaces will be available by next Christmas.
