CARING Cleobury folk are shedding light on the plight of cancer sufferers in a festive fund-raiser.

Furlongs Road householders have been inspired by the memory of fellow resident Janet Arrowsmith, 72, who died of the disease last month.

The former deputy headteacher of Cleobury Mortimer Primary School received care at the Millbrook Day Centre, Kidderminster Hospital. Pete and Susan Breakwell who have lit up their home to raise cash for the Millbrook Day Centre, Kidderminster.

Six neighbours have bedecked their homes in Christmas lights to raise funds for the centre which cares for cancer sufferers.

Organiser Susan Breakwell said: "There are many people in Cleobury, such as Mrs Arrowsmith, who have used the centre and we wanted to give something back.

"We hope to raise as much money as possible for what is a very important and worthy cause."

The £400,000 centre was paid for by the public after a successful appeal by Kidderminster Hospital League of Friends.

Mrs Breakwell said it was the first time the neighbours had raised funds for charity with their lights.

She said: "It all started when one resident, Melvyn Romeo, lit up his carport and my husband Pete decided to outdo him the following year.

"Others in the cul-de-sac have joined in and it has become quite a feature of Cleobury's Christmas."

There is a collection bucket at the side of 36 Furlongs Road for anyone wishing to help boost the funds.
