CAMPAIGNING townsfolk were enraged when community leaders agreed to support the principle of building a supermarket in Droitwich Spa.
Blueprints for a Waitrose store, off the Saltway, were discussed by Droitwich Spa Town Council on Monday.
Residents and Action for Droitwich (AFD) pressure group members packed in to St Richard's House -- a majority against the proposal.
The supermarket could replace the town's market hall, in Gurneys Lane -- if Wychavon District Council approves plans.
AFD, which wanted a supermarket built off Kidderminster Road, hoped to speak about its fears during the public question time.
But due to council procedure, stating any statement to be read out must be with the town council by 5pm on Monday, they were turned down.
Many town councillors raised concerns about the plans.
They said access, heritage, car parking, traffic, store design, effect on town traders and the visual impact on the town and Vines Lane residents need to be carefully considered.
Cllr Richard Morris added: "It would be disastrous to go ahead with this development before we are certain market traders will have a suitable venue."
Planning committee chairman Don Lawley (Con, Droit.South) proposed that members supported the plan in principle subject to proper consideration of concerns raised.
He said: "This development will revitalise the High Street."
This provoked anger among residents -- one shouted "to hell with democracy, to hell with the public."
Three councillors voted in favour of the development and two against.
Cllr Peter Pinfield (Lab, Droit.West) believes the council acted too quickly.
He had hoped it would defer the application while fears were investigated.
