HOME alarms should be fitted with a 20-minute cut-off to prevent ruining neighbours' Christmas, environmental health officers for Wychavon District Council have said.

In a leaflet, Audible Intruder Alarms, the council also recommends people should arrange for a neighbour or friend to act as a keyholder for their homes while they are away.

Included in the leaflet is a form for owners of alarms to complete and return to the council with details of keyholders.

"Most people don't realise that, if their alarm has been sounding for more than 20 minutes, we can apply for a warrant from the Magistrates Court to gain access to their home to switch the alarm off - and the owner has to pay the bill," said Lucie Brewis, Wychavon's technical officer.

"Just by taking a few simple measures you can make sure your Christmas isn't an expensive one and ensure it is peaceful for your neighbours."

Leaflets are available from the council's one stop shops in Droitwich, Evesham, and Pershore, or from the environmental health team on 01386 565233.
