DROITWICH Rugby Club saw off a spirited Evesham side in a 22-0 friendly win at Hanbury Road on Saturday.
Evesham had the better of the early exchanges and pressurised the Spa line but their defence held firm.
After that, Droitwich began to win quality ball and utilise their three quarters, with Bruce Thomas at fly half distributing the ball intelligently. Scrum-half, Nick Grint, made a fine break before putting in a clever kick to allow Rob McClean to gather and out-pace the defence. Shortly afterwards full-back Ben Cottrell entered the line at pace to carve open the Evesham defence and sprint 40 meters to score. It was Cottrell again who took a pass at full pace to score the third try. The second half was a bit scrappy, but Droitwich scored the only points after a break from their own half saw McClean, Cottrell, Nick Godfey and Nick King make ground before Sascha Hobbs rounded off the move to score. Cottrell was named man of the match.
n The North Midlands Cup first round tie between Camp Hill and Kidderminster Carolians was again postponed, this time because Camp Hill had a rearranged Midlands One game against Dunstablians. The cup match has now been rescheduled for January 29.
In delayed first round matches, Clee Hill won 12-5 at Aldridge. Second round results: Stourbridge Lions 52 Warley 6; Redditch 29 Old Griffinians 19; Ledbury 49 Dudley Wasps 19; Veseyans 30 Five Ways OE 10.
