A MUM had to be treated for shock after her house caught fire in the early hours of this morning.

The woman's son, aged 18, was sleeping in the converted attic of the property in Clifton upon Teme at the time.

He raised the alarm after the fire started in the room in which he was sleeping.

Two fire engines from Worcester and one from Bromyard were called to the fire at Burys Place, at 1.39am.

"The fire started somewhere close to the sofa bed, which I believe to be a futon-type mattress," said sub-officer Shaun D'Oliveira, who attended the incident. The boy's mother was on the first floor and we believe his girlfriend was on the ground floor.

"He raised the alarm and they left the building. No one was trapped."

Six firefighters used breathing apparatus when they arrived at the detached black and white property. A portable 27ft ladder was used to smash the attic window.

"The firefighters found it was heavily smoke logged at the top of the staircase going into the roof," said sub-officer D'Oliveira.

"When we arrived the fire had been starved of oxygen, but when we broke the window it started again. The problem was trying to locate the fire because of the heat and smoke. Once we found it we put out it out quickly."

Firefighters took 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, which caused damage to the attic.

The mother was taken to hospital, suffering from shock.
