I WAS most interested to read of a scathing letter from Sir Edward Elgar attacking composer Felix Mendelssohn (Page 3, Evening News, December 6).

My son, Phil, has a copy of the score of Mendlessohn's Elijah with Elgar's signature, in pencil, on the front cover. It was given to him by his music teacher, the late Edgar Day, on the occasion of a performance of Elijah in Worcester Cathedral.

He explained that as young man, Elgar had taken him to a performance of Elijah in Gloucester Cathedral and gave him his own score to enable him to follow the performance. Edgar Day added his own signature and gave it to Phil for the same purpose.

JOHN G HINTON,

Worcester.
