A decision on sports hall provision in Malvern has been deferred by Malvern Hills District Council's executive committee after members balked at county council estimates for potential work on sporting facilities at a town school.

Coun Paul Cumming's proposal that there be a "slight chill" in the decision-making process pending a further review was adopted at a meeting on Tuesday, after an officer revealed the £785,500 estimate for work at Dyson Perrins School.

Corporate director Colin Davis told members he was "totally taken aback" by the figures received from Worcestershire County Council for a project to install changing rooms, a sports hall and gym, which included a figure of £102,000 for professional costs.

"It's certainly very disappointing - these are very large figures," said Coun Graham Myatt.

"But I really do take some comfort that we are not going to abandon ideas of a sports hall in Malvern because we really do need one."
