A FAMILY-run Stourport firm is supporting a cause close to its heart after one of its two partners was diagnosed with skin cancer in July.

The Wash House in Wilden Lane, an electrical shop run by Phil Bowden and his brother has sparked interest in a Christmas raffle for cancer research after donating household items as prizes.

"My brother, who does not wish to be named, has had two major operations for a tumour on his leg," explained Mr Bowden.

"It's always something you think is going to happen to somebody else but we've taken it in our stride - it's harder when you stop and think about it."

When Mr Bowden noticed his local pub, the Kings Arms, Areley Kings, was a having a Christmas raffle to raise money for the Cancer Research Campaign, he realised some good could come of their trauma.

Pub landlord, Brian Whetton, has raised a massive £50,000 over the last 12 years for the cause.

He said: "We decided to ring our suppliers and ask for donations," said Mr Bowden. "The response has been incredible. We've got about 10 items including a washing machine, a cooker, a video recorder and a vacuum cleaner."

Mr Bowden has decided to split the goods between the pub and the Kemp Hospice, Kidderminster, which cares for people with life-threatening illnesses, including cancer.
