LOVE, drinking, death and dancing will be filling Worcester's Huntington Hall in the New Year.

With the Mellstock Band's show called Love and Liquor, Death and Dancing being just one of the many performances to banish the post-Christmas blues, staff at the Hall have promised something for all tastes.

The band, which plays English village songs, music and carols from the 18th Century to the present day, will join the UK's leading stargazer Patrick Moore, the Backbeat Beatles and Ben Okafor, whose unique blend of reggae and jazz continues to delight audiences.

On Friday, January 11, Fairport Convention violinist Ric Sanders will be performing with guitarist Vo Fletcher, percussionist Mike Gregory and special guest and fellow Fairporter Chris Leslie.

The following Tuesday, January 15, sees Ben Okafor at the Hall. The singer, who fuses reggae with African folk, a little jazz and Ska, visits after extensive tours in the United States, Nigeria, Europe and South Africa.

The Mellstock Band comes to the city on Saturday, January 19, followed by the Backbeat Beatles on Friday, January 25.

The latter claims to be the only fab four tribute band which really captures the atmosphere of the Beatles in Hamburg in 1961.

On Saturday, January 26, ten-piece brass section Nearly Dan performs legendary recordings of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen. On Thursday, January 31, Paul Jones, formerly of 60s pop group Manfred Man, and Dave Kelly will be singing the blues.

For those looking for verse, writer and raconteur Gyles Brandreth will be looking at the A to Z of wit and wordplay on Friday, January 18. The sometime actor and MP will share anecdotes from his own life to explore what makes a laugh and why.

On Tuesday, January 22, Holocaust survivor Paul Oppenheimer will talk about his life escaping the Nazis in Germany and share his memories of the death camps.

On Thursday, January 24, stargazer Patrick Moore will be returning with his latest lecture, First Contact, which looks at the discoveries made in recent years through space exploration.

For information on the events or to buy tickets, contact the Hall's box office on 01905 23428.
