A DEDICATED Worcestershire woman has become the first Briton to qualify in the original Pilates method fitness regime.

Helen Callow has spent more than 600 hours training in Holland and at the authentic New York Pilates Studio for the award.

And since returning to her Leigh Sinton home at the end of September this year, she has started her own business.

"It's called BodyBase," said 35-year-old Helen (seen left).

"And I've just had a piece of equipment called a "Reformer" shipped in from America.

"Joseph Pilates invented the machines and because I studied the original Pilates method, I needed an original piece of equipment that was not refined in any way."

She now takes classes at Cannons Health Club in Worcester and hires a room at Bodyworks II gym in Malvern, but specialises in one-to-one classes.

"It's just so interesting to work with people and see the results," added Miss Callow.

"It's very rewarding to see people overcome their problems.

"Everyone seems to be enjoying it and seeing the benefits."

The Pilates Method, invented by Joseph Pilates, stretches, tones and strengthens the body without building bulky muscle. It can also help posture and ease backache.

Miss Callow, who was studying in New York at the time of the September 11 terrorist attacks, had to complete 75 hours of training before she was even considered for the course.

"I went on a 12-day course to learn the basics in Holland.

"Then I went to New York for six weeks where we had written and practical exams," she said.

And to make sure she keeps up with new developments she still has annual examinations.
