WHAT a pity the Malvern Gazette seems to have accepted government propaganda about performance tables hook, line and sinker. ('School trails in county list', December 7).

The Government (whether Labour or Conservative) seems to believe that 'Naming and Shaming' improves standards. What we all know in our own lives is that we do better when we are encouraged and praised.

Your headline about one particular school will further undermine the morale of teachers, pupils and parents in that school. What it needs to improve its standards is unreserved support from the education authority and from the local community of Malvern, not a coldly critical headline in the local paper.

If you wish to comment on performance tables (whose interpretation, as all the headteachers in your article agreed, is fraught with difficulties), why not focus on the many schools in the Malvern area which achieved outstandingly good results?
