THE people of Ronkswood have been campaigning for pedestrian crossings on Newtown Road for 30 years. Several petitions have been submitted, the last by the Independents.
There are however still no crossings, to the existing hospital, the school, or the shops and local pub. Yet the traffic on this road becomes busier and busier, while minor accidents abound - to the point whereby the screech of emergency braking at the staggered junction of Trent Road and Newtown Road is almost a daily event.
Traffic means it is now impossible for senior citizens to cross this road during busy periods.
The refuge installed near the Gun Tavern, and featured in Evening News articles, is lethal. The elderly, standing at that refuge, and attempting to cross to the "north", cannot see traffic to the "left", at sufficient distance to cross safely, and have to gamble on drivers slowing down.
Vast sums of public money have been spent in "old" Warndon, on traffic-calming measures, and I believe the people of Ronkswood are entitled to ask why Newtown Road, which is far busier, and has higher traffic speeds, has not received comparable investment.
Couldn't road safety measures have been funded from "enabling development," bearing in mind the millions being spent at the top of Newtown Road? Is anyone prepared to explain publicly, to the people of Ronkswood, why roundabouts, or pedestrian crossing facilities (at Humber Road, Trent Road and the first junction of Canterbury Road) have not been installed?
The people of Ronkswood are coming to the end of the tether regarding the lack of crossings.
N TAYLOR,
Worcester.
