ORGANISERS of a special beacon chain to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee next summer have chosen Malvern as one of its locations.

The Malvern Hills will host one of 137 official beacons when the Golden Jubilee Summer Party Anchor Chain takes place on the evening of Monday, June 3.

The event, which is being backed by the Malvern Hills Conservators, will follow a day of street and garden parties.

"We want to have a really good bonfire that can be seen for miles on end," said Conservator John Tretheway.

"Let's make it memorable for all our residents, young and old."

The Conservators have agreed in principle to hold a Worcestershire Beacon bonfire but have set up a working party to examine details.

It still needs to consult with English Nature and the official organisers of the chain, the Junior Association of the Royal Instit-ution of Chartered Surveyors.

Malvern Town Council said it was "fully supportive of the idea" for the beacon chain and party events.

A budget of £5,000 for a Jubilee event was approved by the council in its budget discussions earlier this month.

It hopes Malvern Hills District Council and the Conservators will also associate themselves with the events.

Malvern's choice as a venue to take part in the beacon chain comes only weeks after the town was bypassed by organisers of another Golden Jubilee event involving a special baton relay.
