PLANS to rebuild the damaged Tesco supermarket in Oakenshaw following a devastating fire in the summer have hit a snag because of the colour of the new scheme.

The company applied to Redditch Council to construct a white clad panel building which would be quick to put up and easier than conventional bricks and mortar.

But council officers and councillors on the planning committee agreed the white panels were unacceptable even though they would be at the side and back of the store.

They feel it might show through the landscaping around the site.

Most of the building is made of red brick at the moment.

Tesco will now have to submit darker samples of the cladding if the plans are to go ahead.

The company's other plans include providing nearly 100 more car parking spaces and building a traffic island at its entrance on Coldfield Drive to improve safety.

Tesco is also including a sprinkler system to the store.
