STRATFORD'S Swan Theatre will be the venue for a new version of Heinrich von Kleist's final masterpiece The Prince of Homburg.

After the success of their award-winning co-production of The Dispute at The Other Place, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith join forces to present the play from January 24 until February 16.

The German playwright has been hailed as one of the most enigmatic figures in theatre history.

Driven to suicide aged 34, Kleist left behind seven plays which have since been recognised as paving the way for a modern theatre.

The Prince of Homburg, completed just before his death, concerns the emotional turmoil which confronts the Prince.

The night before leading his troops into battle, the Prince strips off his uniform and goes sleepwalking.

Moonstruck, his mind races with fantasies of love, ambition and victory but when morning comes a single act of disobedience sets in motion a chain of events which lead to the one thing he never dreamt would happen.

Tickets cost £5-£32 from the box office on 01789 403403.
