THE Mellstock Band features in Love and Liquor, Death and Dancing - the great things in life according to Thomas Hardy - at Worcester's Huntingdon Hall on January 19 (8pm).
The band plays and sings the dances, songs, carols and music of English village and church bands from the 18th century to the present day. The repertoire and style come from village musicians' manuscript books and from living traditions of song and instrumental music, from all parts of England.
With fiddle, concertina, flute and serpent, the music is enhanced with period costume and spoken word.
Members of the band use their skills to create a vital, present-day musical experience rather than a museum-like reproduction of something past. They usually use instruments in their 19th century form for the sake of authentic sounds. Tickets cost £9 (concessions £8) from the box office on 01905 611427.
