WHILE I agree with Terry James (Evening News, December 24) that it's frustrating most Post Offices ran out of Christmas second class stamps before the last posting date, I must take issue with him regarding his statement that they also ran out of definitive second class as well.
The reason there was a shortage of second class Christmas stamps, yet a surfeit of first class, was due to the fact that it was decided to run a game in which people could win prizes if they changed from second to first and bought at least a dozen first class stamps.
This reduced the issue of second class to offices and greatly increased the first class.
Due to the shortage of Christmas second class stamps there was an increase in the selling of definitive ones, but at no time was there a shortage.
In fact, only this morning - December 27 - I sold nearly 600 to a local businessman.
It's up to your local sub-postmaster to order his/her stamps and there's no reason why they should run out of them. I hope this puts the facts straight.
