TOLLADINE Golf Club's new captain Mick McMahon admits he was surprised but delighted to be nominated to succeed Mike Day.
The 39-year-old has been involved in the club for five years and as captain is aiming to promote Saturday morning golf.
Mick, who is Worcester born-and-bred, took up his new role at midnight on New Year's Eve and braved freezing temperatures to successfully drive off and hit the green on the ninth 12 hours later.
"I was shocked when I was first asked to become captain but once it had sunk in it was an honour and privilege to accept," he said.
"It was a very proud moment when I was presented with the captain's jacket and I managed to get through the speech.
"I've been seriously playing golf for about five years and my golf is either good or awful. I certainly wasn't chosen to be captain on my golfing ability."
His plans for the year, apart from reducing his 21 handicap, include regenerating Saturday morning golf at the club which has dwindled to just a few tee-off times.
"It's like millionaires' golf at the moment with just a few people playing on a Saturday, so I would like to encourage more people to play," he said.
An Irish and Valentine's Night are also in the pipeline as well a Captain's Week in June and July with a series of competitions.
