A WHEELCHAIR-bound great-grandmother had a lucky escape after a homemade bomb was thrown at her home.
The 80-year-old phoned police after hearing an object hit her window while she was watching television.
Only later she discovered her Kidderminster home could have been destroyed.
The pensioner, a survivor of the Blitz in London during the Second World War, was preparing to go to bed on Saturday evening when she heard a noise outside her home in Tennyson Way, on the Offmore Estate.
"There was a noise outside. I can't really describe what it sounded like but it was a strange sound and I thought I'd better ring the police," she said.
Police found a soft drinks can in the front garden packed with an unidentified flammable liquid. It had a wick attached to it.
Police confirmed the wick had been lit before being thrown at the window.
"I don't know why anyone would do this," said the pensioner, who does not wish to be named.
"I suppose some people will think it's youngsters who've done this, but I just don't know. I just can't understand why they did this and I just feel very sad."
Despite the setback, she has vowed to carry on living life as normally as she can.
"You can't let people frighten you too much," she said.
"Anyhow, I trust in God to look after me."
Her neighbour Doreen Glover, who has lived on the estate for more than a decade, said she had noticed a marked deterioration in recent times.
"We've had people ringing the doorbell and rushing off and often we've had strange noises outside," she said.
"It's too dangerous to answer the door after dark now. This is very worrying especially for us older people. I wish they'd leave us alone."
Kidderminster police have said that it is fortunate the incident, which happened around 8pm, was not much more serious.
"This device had the potential to inflict a severe injury, and it's fortunate it didn't explode and nobody was hurt," said spokesperson Caroline Schubert.
She urged the public to help track down those responsible.
"We're appealing for anyone with information about this incident to contact us."
Anyone who can help is asked to contact Kidderminster police on 01562 820888.
