THE Primrose Hospice has been refused more than half a million pounds for an extension which could increase day capacity for cancer patients by at least half annually, writes Melina Cannon.

After a 15-month wait, the Community Fund informed the hospice its application for £560,000 lottery cash was unsuccessful, although the charity has been invited to re-apply once certain criteria have been met.

The project involves constructing a two-storey care building for clinical and support services and providing new improved and expanded services.

The plan was drawn up because the current building is deemed overcrowded, outdated and 'unsuitable for the provision of clinical and care support services' and its completion would increase annual patient day capacity from 500 to more than 750.

Fund-raising manager Jane Wardman said staff were disappointed at the news.
