RUBBISH piled up in some Bromsgrove streets last week after householders, many of whom had already waited two weeks for a collection, were forced to hang on even longer because of the snow.

Residents in both Walton Road and Bewell Head rang the Advertiser/Messenger to complain about bags of rubbish left in the street after the refuse collection vehicle could not negotiate the snow and ice on the roads.

One concerned Bewell Head resident, Susan Lloyd, told your No.1 community newspaper she rang Bromsgrove District Council, but said no one seemed to want to know about the problem.

She added: "They didn't come at all over Christmas week and they were due to come the Wednesday after New Year but they could not get up the road because it was not gritted.

"People had put their rubbish out in the road.

"No one seemed to want to know but we pay our council tax the same as everyone else and we haven't had our rubbish taken away."

The authority's head of technical services, John Moody, said some neighbouring authorities made no attempt to collect rubbish, but the district council made every effort to collect on the days specified.

He said crews often worked until 7pm to clear the backlog and added: "When it is not safe we will not put our men or the public at risk."
