THE hunt is on to find present-day architectural gems in the Bromsgrove district.
This week the Bromsgrove Society launched a search to find buildings worthy of receiving its prestigious architectural awards.
They were first made more than 20 years ago to recognise the work of architects and conservationists who had contributed to the local environment in the district.
However, they have not been held since 1998 because the society felt that few if any new or revamped buildings warranted an award.
Four years ago Bromsgrove Golf Centre, off Stratford Road, and Wilson's Pet Centre, in Market Street, both received awards.
The Lillie Langtry coffee house in Satchwell's Yard, High Street, and the Market Hall have been previous winners.
Society vice chairman, Desmond Clarke, from Alvechurch Highway, Lydiate Ash, who is also the award's joint co-ordinator, said: "This year's award will cover any project completed between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2001.
The closing date is March 31, 2002.
A team of judges is asking for nominations for the following categories: New buildings, building modernisation, conversion to alternative use, conservation work to buildings and landscape improvements or new work.
He added awards will be given for outstanding work which have made a valuable addition or contribution to the environment in the Bromsgrove District Council area.
"Although we are not anticipating anything dramatic, we hope the 2002 competition will produce entries of merit," he said.
If awards and commendations are given they will be presented at the Society's annual meeting on July 4, 2002.
Entry forms and more information can be obtained from Mr Clarke, at 19, Alvechurch Highway Lydiate Ash, Bromsgrove, B60 1NZ, tel 0121 453 3034.
