POLICE are hoping a motorist may hold vital information about a road crash which has left a top policeman fighting for his life.

The accident happened on the A4538 at Wyre Piddle at about 5.15pm on Monday, when Chief Insp Ian Browning, the driver of a blue Ford Mondeo, received extensive injuries in a head-on collision with a First Midland Red bus at the Lower Moor junction.

Following house-to-house in-quiries by police officers, two more witnesses have come forward.

But Sgt Paul Bogaard said officers believe there is someone who may hold vital information, after witnesses told of a third vehicle that was seen at the time, possibly turning right in the direction of Throckmorton.

"We have several witnesses with information about a third vehicle in the area and we're very keen to trace the driver," he said.

"It's possible that, although unaware the collision has occurred, he or she may hold the key to unravelling what happened."

Chief Insp Browning, of Redditch Division, remains in a critical but stable state in intensive care at Worcester Royal Infirmary.

"Everyone who works or has ever worked with Ian is deeply shocked at what has happened," said acting Supt Rod Reynolds, of Worcester police.

"Our thoughts are Ian and his family at this very difficult time."

Anyone with details in urged to contact Worcester police on 01905 723888 quoting c/549071. Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
