Terriers honoured
THE Herculean efforts of the Territorial Army during the floods of 2000 have been recognised.
214 Battery (Worcester) TA was presented with a gift of a decanter by Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade in recognition of all its hard work in the floods of autumn 2000 - the worst in more than 40 years.
The soldiers helped firefighters evacuate people from their flooded homes, build sandbag defences and rescue pets when the county's emergency services were stretched to near breaking point.
They also carried thousands of to and from the city in Army lorries when Worcester's New Road was closed in the worst of the flooding.
David Dwyer, Chief Fire Officer, said the presentation was a mark of gratitude from the fire brigade and also people the army had helped.
"Nothing was too much trouble for the soldiers during the many joint flood relief operations we carried out," he told the assembled crowd at a small ceremony held on the banks of the Severn yesterday.
