CONCERNED mothers of Pershore schoolchildren are campaigning for a safe way to cross a busy road.

Some of the parents are so worried for the safety of their children they have written to Worcestershire County Council to ask for some sort of crossing along Defford Road and have set up their own initiative - Safe Kids in Pershore - to walk their children to and from Pershore schools.

The initiative was launched last autumn and consists of about 50 parents who are all seeking a safety measure to help their children cross the road.

The county council has passed on the mothers' concerns and a petition with 100 signatures to the highways partnership unit, which has agreed to carry out a feasibility study.

One of the mothers, Agnes Tomlinson, who has six-year-old triplets, said: "We are not looking for a specific kind of crossing.

"Anything would be helpful really because there is no place you can safely cross and nothing to assist you in getting across.

"There's a couple of bends that make it difficult for cars to see children crossing the road and there is no signage to alert drivers.

"By the time my children are aged eight or nine, there should be no reason why they couldn't walk to school by themselves but, at the moment, it is too dangerous for them to cross the road on their own.

"We want to make it safer for our children to get to school. There has been three or four near misses and we do not want to wait until something happens."

Geoff Cox, highways partnership unit manager at Worcestershire County Council, said no definite date had been set for the feasibility studies but added: "Now the schools are back, we will be looking at doing something in the near future."
