HEADTEACHERS in Worcestershire will be given laptops by the start of the summer term as part of a £100m Government computer scheme.
Education Secretary Estelle Morris said the county's share of the funding pot would not be enough to provide every teacher with a laptop - but that would be the Government's final goal.
The priority at this stage would be to make sure all headteachers had a computer they could take home.
Any money left from Worcestershire's allocation, which has not yet been announced, could then be used to purchase laptops for other teaching staff.
Ms Morris said the announcement reaffirmed the Government's ongoing commitment to providing teachers with regular and personal access to computers to build up their knowledge of IT.
A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said: "The new Laptops for Teachers scheme will go a long way to meeting the demand for personal access to computers by teachers."
Meanwhile, the Government is giving every Worcestershire primary school a digital microscope as part of Science Year.
The move forms the second part of the Kit Pot fund, which offers science teachers equipment to inspire youngsters.
