CONTRARY to the remarks made by Helen Smart (You Say, January 5) I believe Anita Knittel has every right to express her views on animal rights.
Though we may disagree on the subject of hunting, it is essential for her to be allowed to speak out on something she has such strong feelings about.
It will certainly be a sorry day for this country if someone like Anita Knittel is prevented from participating in open debate just because they happen to hold a minority point of view.
On a personal note, I must thank Anita for all her letters to the Evening News. They have certainly helped me develop the arguments that leave absolutely no doubt that we must retain hunting.
Robust public debate is at the very heart of our political system. To allow any minority to be robbed of the right to free speech holds great dangers for us all.
Single issue groups who are intent on forcing their extreme doctrine on others might learn from our present Government who claim to be ''building a safe, just and tolerant society''.
