A MISSED penalty flick proved costly as Bretforton Ladies were forced to settle for runners-up spot at FISSC's end of season tournament.
Goals were scarce all afternoon with Bretforton losing out to a solitary Shipston strike in the opening group game.
However, three single goal successes booked the villagers a final date with the hosts and another close-fought contest ensued.
It proved an open game as legs were becoming weary on both sides and Sophie Corbett bundled Bretforton into the lead after a goalmouth scramble.
With the trophy in sight, Bret fought hard to the end but FISSC were awarded a penalty corner in the final minute and another melee resulted in a home equaliser.
Ten minutes of extra-time failed to separate the sides and it was the hosts who secured a shoot-out success at the end of a hectic days play.
Missed chances cost Bret-forton the chance to level Shipston's goal in the opening game, while a Corbett effort was again all that separated the sides when Great Alne faced Bretforton in the tournament's second match.
A penalty corner gave the villagers the chance to strike the only goal in their next outing against Bromsgrove with Corbett again the scorer - a win that took Bretforton into the semi-finals.
There they found local rivals Blockley and both teams also had to endure some heavy rain.
The deciding goal was scored by Sarah (Smith) after an end-to-end struggle and the hectic action continued unabated for the villagers until that fateful last-gasp failed penalty flick.
